Is Your Home Ready For Winter?
Winter is fast approaching here in the Miss-Lou. Before temps drop into the freeze zone, take a few minutes to winter-proof your home and avoid burst pipes, no heat, and costly repairs. A little preparation now can save you from big headaches later.
Our “Winter-Proof Your Home: Essential Checklist” can help walk you through the basics. Read on!
Protect Your Pipes
• Disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior faucets if possible
• Add insulated covers to outdoor spigots.
• Insulate exposed pipes in attics, crawl spaces, and garages.
• On severe freeze nights, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let a slow trickle run from vulnerable faucets to help prevent freezing.
Service Your Heating Systems
• Schedule a professional furnace/heating inspection to catch issues early and improve efficiency.
• Replace filters regularly for better airflow and cleaner air.
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level and install fresh batteries if needed.
Seal Air Leaks & Drafts
• Use caulk or weatherstripping around windows, doors, and where pipes or wires enter the house.
• Clean gutters so melting ice can drain properly, reducing the risk of ice dams and water damage.
• Consider adding attic insulation to keep more heat inside and help lower energy bills.
